FAQ

June 16th, 2008

This is a new page and we would love to hear questions in the comments senction below from you about Steve and his work. I will start this out simply with these few.

Does it hurt?

Yes. I understand where this question naturally comes from when most people haven’t endured this type of pain. I personally have endured child birth, breast augmentation and all forms of alternative body modification like implants, brandings, scarification and flesh hook suspension. Child birth and breast augmentation kicked my ass like no other modification I have ever done before! - CooKie

Didn’t Steve go to jail for this?

No, Steve has never been incarcerated for this art form or anything else for that matter. Steve stays on his side of the grey line.

Did someone once die from getting an implant?

Due the the high amount of artists, world wide, I can not make the definative statement that hasn’t happened. HOWEVER, Steve has NEVER heard of this occurance happening and no one has ever died from getting an implant or modification from him. He believes that his work as a body modification artist doesn’t end until you have healed completely and tries to be as accessible as much to you during this time.

How can I learn this art form?

Although no one has “officially” learned how to do this art form from Steve, many have purchased his tools and there are many body modification artists world wide. Please refer to conventions like BMX NET in Germany for more information.

Can Steve implant nipples, make my ears smaller or help me with a sex change?

I get a lot of emails from people asking about having him implant nipples for then since the lost them from cancer, altering the ears for a more normal appearance or even help with sex changes. All of these cases are very understandable because it’s hard to find doctors who will do this the way the person wants or because the doctors fees are very high and they can’t afford them. We have great sympathy for you and really wish we could help. Unfortunately, we can not or Steve could go to jail for practicing medicine without a license.

The medical industry has set a very clear line of boundries that state that they will not modify people away from what society deems normal or “pleasing”. In short, we will not cross those lines no matter how much Steve would be the right person for what it is that you need. We have children and a life that we can’t risk losing for anyone and I am sure you understand that.

How do I get a hold of Steve personally to ask questions?

At this time it is rather difficult to reach him personally for questions related to work. Your best bet is to email CooKie at contact@stevehaworth.combecause all emails are reviewed with Steve and responded to as promptly as possible. Feel free to email again if you have not received a response with in a month. The high traffic of phone calls has made the option of the phone no longer available and email is the best way for me to keep up on what is going on. Some work will require a consultation and if you would prefer to have a consultation by phone prior to making an appointment that is totally an option.

I want custom implants that no one else has…

The concept of custom implants is coming a long. We have seen the need for it and are beginning to design custom implants for people who are interested. Please keep in mind that if you are seeking an ultra custom design that would not be re-usable that you will be looking at a cost of $3-5,000.00 USD for the implants alone. If you are seeking custom implants I expect you to already have work previously from Steve in the subdermal implants as custom work is currently experimental and we would like you to know how to care for your new work.

Can Steve recommend someone close to me to do work?

No, for liability purposes we will not be able to recommend anyone for work.

Flesh and Blood is the story of American body modification artist Steve Haworth who spawned a subculture. People who’ve become bored with traditional tattoos and piercings, flock to his Phoenix, Arizona home from around the world for procedures that for instance allow them to screw and unscrew stainless steel objects into their bodies. Flesh and Blood is a small glimpse into this world he helped to create. People come for a variety of reasons to be modified which Steve helps them achieve. Flesh and Blood is not just a freak show; it was shot over a 5 year period and covers 15 years of Haworth’s evolution as an artist.

Forms: Documentary, Feature
Genres: Alternative, Underground, Avant-garde, Cult, Reality, Culture, Art

  1. It's such a wonderful thing to have the van Gogh of body modification in our backyard (Phoenix). I would love to see the entire film. If possible could you point me in the correct direction to get a hold of it?

One thing I have promised myself that I must do before I leave this world is be suspended by hooks in the back. You are the only one that I would look to for help in living that dream out. Thanks for the beautiful art. No matter What medium it's in It's is all art to me.

    Keep up the great work

  3. Astonishing revelation about the true desires of individuality, freedom, and determination of the soul to escape from standard embodiment to share a passion of expression. It’s a beautiful thing…

  4. You have achieved for some what no one else would dream of. You bring their dreams of what they can do with their body to life. You are a master of your craft and an amazing artist. Keep up the amazing work, never stop. It shouldn't ever be punishable to be an artist, flesh, paint, or clay. It is all the same.

  1. I've read about the magnetic implant that you performed which created an extra sense. I am very interested in it and would like to explore this new sense.

Any information and/or product details on the magnet would be great! I live in Australia and its one thing that interests me above all other body modification.

I think I am in love with the heart-shaped punch. I am not sure how well it'd go over at work (legal profession) but I just might take the risk. Thank you for sharing your work.

About Steve Haworth

December 28th, 2006

About:

Before Steve Haworth became known as the pioneer of 3D Body Art he designed superior piercing tools & techniques, created new styles of body jewelry, designed amazing shaped dermal punches & jewelry (like stars), perfected surface to surface piercing, and began electro cauterary branding. An artist who’s often quoted as saying “flesh is my medium”; his living art is in the form of 3D Implants, Transdermals and Electro Cauterary Branding of various individuals, who work with Steve to design the ideal type of art for them to display in their daily life.

He continues to explore other art media, including [body modification photography->] and metal sculpture, but is mostly known for his incredible 3D Body Art. Check out his portfolio for examples…

History:
Originally a designer and manufacturer of medical equipment (for plastic surgery) Steve started his own company, Haworth Tech Company, in 1986. Four years later he began producing body jewelry and became a piercer, shortly afterward opening HTC Body Adornments (now known as HTC Body Piercing). Due to the extensive knowledge of anatomy that was necessary for producing medical equipment, Steve began exploring the idea of 3D Body Art. He designed special tools to create his art, and did the first body-jewelry style implant on himself, an
8g CBR-style implant in his right wrist. As of today he is known world-wide as the originator of this type of art, in some circles considered to be the most controversial artist on the planet, began a flesh-hook suspension group (Life Suspended), won a Guiness World Record, helped found the Church of Body Modification, has been labelled the father of modern body modification, became a professional photographer, had multiple documentaries filmed about him, created tattoo & piercing trading cards and been interviewed more times than he can remember.

Self Promotion:
Steve does not like it. However, he does have some cool MODIFIED shirts lying around. Check out “Modified For MY Pleasure” & “Modified For Her Pleasure” T-shirts!

Etc:
Steve likes wind turbines. And [trilobites->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilobite]. Check out some wonderful trilobyte examples: Trilobyte From Morocco - Trilobyte From Russia - Metal Trilobyte Artwork - Steve’s Trilobyte Tattoo

  8. To each his own. I enjoyed your introduction and strongly agree. I was doing my research for no particular reason and your name came up. I thought it was crazy how in an article it said: "Cat cannot go under the surgeon's knife because it is illegal in the United States for a medical professional to alter someone's appearance beyond what society deems normal. " Social norms create laws. -sigh-

Please Read Before Emailing Me

Due to the high amount of inquiries, email is preferable. In your email please always include your name, phone # and email address IN EVERY EMAIL. This is done because we receive literally hundreds of emails a week and it is difficult to keep track of various conversations. This will help us respond to you in a more effective way specifically for your needs.

Please be very specific of your inquiry and what it is that is your ultimate goal. Pricing is relatively simple but will vary upon size of your piece. Keep in mind that custom work is time consuming and prices will increase.

Also, I have began an ‘FAQ’ Page for you that I will update as I see a lot of the same questions come to me. I am updating it as often as possible so that you may be able to refer to there prior to emailing us. This will hopefully be more helpful to us all.

Welcome From Steve Haworth

December 27th, 2006

This is the online portfolio of Steve Haworth, the 3D Body Modification Artist

Steve Haworth is an accomplished body modification artist and inventor of various piercings, piercing tools, piercing techniques, laser branding, ear pointing and most well known for The 3-D Body Art and Metal Mohawk. Raised in a family that manufactured and invented medical devices used in eye surgeries and plastic surgeries, his knowledge in the field gave him ideas for alternate forms of modifications. In 1990 he began producing body jewelry, as a side project to the medical device design for the plastic surgery field under a company named “Haworth Tech Company” or now known as HTC. When his body jewelry sales out sold his medical tool sales and his passion for body piercing excelled, he turn HTC into the first piercing studio here in Phoenix, Arizona. He owned and operated HTC till May of 2005, when he decided to move back into the manufacturing end of the industry, with Kaos Softwear and most recently, New Hole. Steve has retired from piercing so please do not inquire about piercing projects.

In early 1994, Steve invented the concept of implanting steel under the skin, 3-D Body Art. Then the Metal Mohawk emerged and managed to create quite the contraversy. The most common question that was circling was, “How can he do this with out being a doctor?” It is against a doctors code of ethics to modify the body away from what society deems ‘normal’ or pleasing.

His art form has become wide spread across the planet since 1994. He has been in countless documentaries and included in the Guiness Book of World Records 1999 to current “Most Advanced Body Modification Artist”. His implants have evolved from implant grade stainless steel to implant grade teflon and now he mostly works in implant grade silicone. He is available for those interested in this type of 3-D Body Art, but we highly recommend research and serious consideration before modifying your body in this fashion. His art form is still evolving to this day and it seems the limits are only left to the imagination.

Some people may look at this website, browse through the portfolios and come to the conclusion that they want to become part of Steve’s art form. Some others may immediately decide that they don’t like what they see. They may be offended by the subject matter, by the form that Steve’s art takes, by the extreme individualism exhibited herein. To those people, he would ask only that you take a moment to read the following before passing judgement…

Body Modification, as a whole, is as simple as chemically or physically altering your body. It can be as easy as hair dye or facials. There are many ways someone may modify themself to make them feel more comfortable in their own skin, more like themself. Some that are more extreme, yet more socially accepted, might be breast reduction or augmentation, body building or gastric bypass surgery. Those are all forms of very extreme modifications, but seem to be less frowned upon by society. When tattoos and piercings are becoming more acceptable these days, so will this form of modification. Those with open minds realize that this may not necessarly be about hurting yourself, but might be as simple as being comfortable in your skin, being yourself.

Please note that the Steve Haworth Trilobyte Logo is copywrite 1994-2008.
